Usually strawberry picking season is over by mid-late June in our area. Because of the crazy spring weather we had this year, picking season didn’t even start until the first week in July (we know this because we tried taking the boys picking about 2 weeks prior to that but hit a dead end when the berry farm wasn’t even open yet!).
We got up bright & early (who am I kidding, I have two toddlers, we got up right around normal awake time in our house) and headed to the berry farm. The berry farm we went to opens up at 6 AM and, because of it being opening picking week, they were starting to turn people away for the day by 8-8:30 AM…crazy!! We met my parents there around 7-7:15 AM and got to picking.
Wyatt loved it – he was helping Papa and was having so much fun doing it. Wyatt made sure the biggest berries ended up in “his” bucket! Colton, on the other hand, was not all that interested in helping out. He didn’t mind being there & he walked between all three of us, mostly just exploring. They both loved helping move the white flags (which marked where we had pick to within that row).
We ended up picking a total of 9 buckets full! 2 for us and 7 for my parents (they froze quite a bit). Cory’s mom took 1 of the buckets & made us a big batch of strawberry jam that we’ve got in the freezer and we enjoyed eating the other bucket full! The line to check out took almost as long as it did to pick the berries, they were so busy.
It was a fun adventure that the boys (mostly) enjoyed, as did I! And nothing beats FRESH, local produce! I’m planning on watching for raspberry & blueberry picking times this summer too…especially now that we have practice & the boys know what it’s all about.
