4th of July

We spent the day as a family this year for the 4th of July. (In past years we’ve went camping, but decided not to this year, as we were holding the boys’ birthday party that Saturday.) We did a little home improvement shopping in the morning and went out for lunch. After naps (only Colton – Wyatt was on nap-strike that day), we headed over to our good friends’ house for a grill-out, play time & fireworks!

We had such a fun time! The boys brought their 4-wheelers, so we had 4 of them buzzing around the yard & on the trails they have behind their house most of the night (until batteries started to die). The mosquitoes were quite bad, but a little bug spray was enough to keep them away…for a while.

This was their first year our boys had seen any type of fireworks. In the past years they’ve been too little & in bed long before any hint of darkness was around. Our friends had bought some fireworks for all of our enjoyment – as you can imagine, we were pretty excited. The kids loved doing the snaps & sparklers…all three boys especially loved stomping on the snaps! After the kid-involved stuff was done, we lit colored smoke bombs & quite a few fountains. My boys really seemed to enjoy the fireworks we had & they were the perfect size to ease us into it. We roasted some s’mores on the campfire before heading home.

We watched fireworks in the air all around us on our drive home (as it wasn’t quite dark out yet & most fireworks were just starting). Wyatt fell asleep in the way home (I think his lack of afternoon nap played into that!) but Colton stayed awake. He fell asleep that night on my lap in the living room because it was a little too noisy in the boys’ room for him to fall asleep with quite a few of our neighbors still lighting off fireworks.

It was a perfect & very relaxing evening that we enjoyed with our very good friends. Thanks “S” family for having us over for a crazy, fun 4th of July!!
