The annual March for Babies event in our area was held the last Saturday in April. They ended up with the best turnout I’ve seen so far for such a great cause! The organizers of our local walk did a lot more advertising in the community this year. I surpassed my original goal of $500 by raising over $685 (& surpassing my total of $500 from last year)!! Totally.awesome!
The weather was beautiful. It was sunny & warm – Cory had actually wished he had worn shorts. Our team of walkers had a great turnout again this year – a total of 20 walkers showed up for my family/friends team! We arrived early to register and turn in our donation sheet. After we registered, we received the walk map, signed up for door prizes, chose a lei (color of the lei was based on who you were walking for – we chose purple because we were walking in honor of our healthy “preemie” babies) and got a breakfast snack of bagels & fruit.
The 3 mile walk was similar to last year’s path. It took us through a local park & some of the surrounding neighborhoods. This wasn’t just any 3 mile walk though; it had fun snack check-points at each of the mile-markers.
At mile marker 1 was a stop at the local Dairy Queen for a free ice cream treat. We chose to save our ice cream coupons for after the walk this year & continued onward. (We did stop in on our way home & take our ice cream to-go – enjoying it later that day & days following!)
At mile marker 2 was a snack table with water, chips & crackers at it. We didn’t need any further refreshments at this time, so again we continued on our way.
At mile marker 3 was a snack table with a variety of fruit – apples, bananas – and a variety of bagels. The boys had each had an apple at the starting line before we left and by this point Wyatt was sleeping so we again just skipped grabbing any snacks.
At the end of the walk there were lots of activities & food to enjoy in. We grabs sub sandwiches, cheese/crackers & juice boxes/water for lunch and enjoyed eating out in the beautiful weather at one of the park picnic tables. A number of local restaurants were there again this year, handing out coupons. The boys were cautious of the dressed-up mascots, but a little less scared this year. Both Colton & I had our names drawn for door prizes, in which we won free pizza & some gift cards. A very enjoyable & successful family-fun morning.
I want to send out a great, big thank you to everyone who joined us for the walk that day. You helped make the walk a success & helped raise awareness for the importance of full-term, healthy babies. I especially want to say thank you to everyone who made a donation toward this awesome cause – it’s because of you that this organization will be able to continue its research & support – helping future generations get a great start in life.
