24 Months Old

We now officially have two 2-year-olds in the house!! Happy 2nd birthday Wyatt & Colton!

Both Cory & I had the entire week off last week (we were too busy having fun so I didn’t get a chance to post anything on the blog - stay tuned; I'm playing catch up!). We got to spend a lot of family time together, & with the extreme heat, we also spent a lot of time at/in the water! We celebrated the boys birthday with dinner out on their birthday and then with a party with friends & family the following day.

The past month has just flown by. The boys continue to surprise us daily with their knowledge & memory – they are so sharp! They also continue to surprise us daily with things to trigger meltdowns – one small thing becomes the whole world to one of them and sometimes it takes a little bit to figure out what the problem is, because it’s not always obvious. We are working with them to use their “words”.

Sleep has gone quickly downhill for Wyatt within the past 2 weeks & continues to be bad. He was always my awesome sleeper, so this change has been quite surprising and hopefully it’s just a phase that he’ll go through quickly. He almost always refuses to go to bed in his crib at night – he wants to sleep in the pack ‘n play (set up in the playroom for bad sleep nights and we use it to separate them for naps on weekends so they sleep better/longer) or on a blanket next to the pack ‘n play on the floor……wait, what??!! I have no idea where it came from but each night is a battle. And, if he wakes up in the middle of the night (which he has been doing a lot more of lately) it’s a whole separate struggle to figure out if/where he’ll go back to sleep. It’s been very, very frustrating as a parent, but really I just want to figure out what’s going on with him if something is bothering him.

Colton has still been doing great sleep-wise (despite being woken up by Wyatt’s screams in the middle of the night when he’s arguing with mommy or daddy about where he’s going to go back to sleep). They both continue their early morning wakings around 5:30 AM or so, with a couple exceptions in the past week where they made it closer to 6 AM (now that, I can handle!). Bedtime is still around 7-7:30 PM. We’ve continued to keep up our normal bedtime routine.

At 24 months, the boys:
- surprise me every day with the new words they can say and speak 2-4 word sentences pretty regularly
- have a new LOVE…”Super Why”!! They still like Mickey & Chuggington but for whatever reason cannot get enough of “Super Why!” and ask to watch him every day! They are still limited in their TV time, because it’s just not needed at this age but it’s a great distraction when
- Love ALL fruit, yogurt, macaroni & cheese, turkey hot dogs, turkey meatballs, bread, grilled cheese, crackers, cheese & Colton’s personal favorite, fruit snacks
- LOVE mommy & daddy reading them books at night before bed – they each pick out their own for the night and definitely have their favorites (Llama Llama Red Pajama, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider, Brown Bear, anything with trains…they have LOTS of favorites!)
- Attempt to put their own clothes on – mostly just their socks, shoes, jackets & hats – but don’t quite have the hang of it yet
- Are so pleased with themselves when they are successful at stabbing their food with their fork.
- Wear size 18 months pants & 2T shirts
- Wear size 4 diapers (still haven’t moved up to size 5 for the overnight)

Wyatt
- loves tools & fixing things…everything in our house is “broke” & he goes around fixing it up for us; I think the screwdriver & hammer are his favorite toys – such a boy!
- struggling with sleep (see above); hopefully it’s a short phase we can move through quickly
- loves to jump & even uses jumping in his temper tantrums
- loves the water; this kid is a fish! It doesn’t matter if we’re at the pool, splash pad or just playing with a bucket full of water in the back yard – he’s wet from head to toe & loves it
- is in a phase of not wanting to wear shoes; he’ll wear them to leave but as soon as we get in the car or in the grass, he’s pulling them off as fast as he can!
- counts – he’s awesome at 1-2-3 & 6-7-8 but definitely tries to fill in the empty spots in-between
- has shown a lot of interest in potty training; every time you ask him if he wants to try the potty, he does & is excited about it and about 80% of the time, he actually pees!!

Colton
- loves everything that moves – trains, trucks, boats, motorcycles, etc.
- not as fond of water as Wyatt, takes a little time to warm up but does enjoy playing in the water
- loves watching for “memi” (semi), bus, truck, dump truck, motorcycle & van especially while riding in the car – says all very well!
- counts – he can count from 1-10 perfectly! Cory taught him the number “11” and sometimes he’ll randomly throw that number in wherever he pleases
- sings the alphabet – he has quite a few letter groups that he can say all in a row; he attempts to sing the whole song (with our fridge magnet set) and gets over 50% correct!
- prefers his crocs over any other type of shoe
